How to Make a Purse from a Sweater

A great way to upcycle a sweater that has outgrown its original use but you can't bear to let it go! (no pun intended). Needing a new purse I had decided that this old sweater was the answer.  I even reused a zipper kept from another sweater project of mine.

Lay sweater on a table and cut to the desired size.

Sew sweater on all sides keeping the top open for the zipper.  Turn right side out.

New use for a old zipper

Zipper was taken from another sweater project of mine.  Never throw out anything you can't use later!

Liner with a pocket.

The liner is an old pillowcase.  The pocket was cut from the double sided opening of the pillowcase.  Sew the pocket in position and then sew the two sides and bottom.

Put the liner right side out in the purse opening and sew around the top as far to the edge you can go.  Don't worry about the openings on either side where the handle is.  These will be hand sewn later.

Zipper in Place

Sew on the zipper and  hand sew the openings on either side of the zipper closed. You can use thread or pull a piece of yard from the cut offs of the sweater to sew in place.

Giving the purse some squareness

To make the purse look boxy I hand sewed the corners by pushing the point inside and hand sewing across the bottom.

Handles

The handles are handsewn  together using yarn from the old left over pieces.  I used the full length of the sleeves and I tied a knot at the top to make my purse shorter.  You can cut the sleeves shorter and just sew them together as well.
